Trying again to create a blog that still exists in 2022


 

Apakah "Blog" atau "Blogging" masih eksis di 2022 ini?


Itulah pertanyaan yang tiba-tiba muncul di benak ini tadi sore sepulang kerja.


Sehabis dinner, barulah saya mulai iseng-iseng googling blog lama saya (O iya....!!! Beberapa tahun lalu saya pernah membuat beberapa blog).....eh ternyata ...blog ini masih aktif.....jadi penasaran login ...and jreeeng....mendaratlah saya di post ini.


Kembali ke blog, yup, menurut Om Google, ternyata ada banyak yang bilang masih eksis dengan berbagai tujuannya.


Dari pemuncak hasil googling ini didapatilah sebuah blog dari Neal Schaffer dengan judul "Are Blog Still Relevant in 2022?"  dan alhasil menurutnya ...MASIH!!!...


Agak tidak percaya, saya telusuri artikel tadi dan tenyata emang masih, tapi memang beradaptasi.


Setelahnya, saya termenung bagaimana dengan blog ini? 


Awalnya seingat saya blog ini dibuat dengan niatan untuk sekedar menjajal dan mencoba berbagi berbagai informasi dan pengetahuan dengan pendekatan Holistic, sederhananya mencoba berbagi berbagai hal namun tidak dibatasi sesuai dengan dengan insight blog ini "Exploring The Shoreless Of The Earth with Humility In His Divinity" (agak tertegun ketika mengetik ini...hehehe....)


Insight blog ini masih bisa relevan, hanya bagaimana adaptasi yang harus dilakukan untuk sekarang. Terakhir posting di tahun 2017 lampau....hahahhaa....


Namun yang jadi pendorong utama untuk mencoba lagi blogging adalah semata insight blog ini menurut saya sendiri masih relevan.


Sooo...wait next all, I'll be back soon.... btw foto anak saya masih relevan juga walau sekarang sudah tidak seimut itu lagi...:)

Dysfunctional Math

A defining characteristic of our age is the unusual math. Today's unprecedented numbers and figures are matched with graphs increasingly exponential in nature--especially the hyper-exponential, purely vertical Profusion Curve. What makes this disconcerting is that plotting the math into the future leads to dysfunction in nearly all directions. Simply stated, the math no longer works in a variety of critical settings.
This math problem arises inevitably from the process of progress. Progress always gives us more and more of everything faster and faster. In the past, when more is what we needed, it was glorious to receive such profusion almost automatically. Now, however, progress is mathematically uncontrollable and volatile. Modern progress has a math problem, and in many ways it will dominate our future. When history decided to explode, it chose to do so on our generational shift.
Following is a representative list to help illustrate this profound mathematical growth. It's important to realize that this is but a partial list and that any single number is not the problem. It's only when all the dots are connected through integration that the true picture of dysfunction comes into view.
  • More video is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than all 3 networks created in 60 years.
  • Google scientists counted over 1 trillion URLs (resources, documents, domain names) on the Web.
  • The average American is exposed to 10 hours of media per day.
  • Half of this is television at 34 hours of TV per week on average.
  • Go to college and you can choose from over 500 baccalaureate degrees.
  • Get a satellite dish and choose from over 1,000 movies a month.
  • The average grocery store has 30,000 different products.
  • There are 55,000 configurations of coffee at Starbucks.
  • We each must learn to operate 20,000 pieces of equipment in our lifetime; In the next century, we'll have a million times more technology than we do now.
  • 400,000 books per year are published in US and Great Britain.
  • Amazon.com offers 24 million consumer products of all kinds, and has sold over 7.5 million unique titles.
  • WebMD, with 22 million visitors per month, has a privacy statement link at the bottom of their home page. Click and read their 30-page explanation of how they'll use your personal data.
  • "There are 35,000 publications a year in neuroscience, and no single researcher knows even 1% of that."
  • Artificial intelligence is increasing ten million times faster than human intelligence.
  • Knowledge workers check email 50 times a day, instant messaging 77 times a day, and visit 40 websites per day.
  • The average desk worker starts something new every 3 minutes.
  • Information overload costs businesses $650 bil/yr and stress costs $300 bil/yr.
  • Information is increasing at a compound annual 60%.
  • One third of us live with extreme stress and 48% believe it has increased over past 5 years.
  • There was more change in the last century than in all of recorded history prior to 1900.
  • There will be a thousand times more change in this century than the last.
  • Apple offers 225,000 apps in its Apps Store, and ten billion were downloaded in just two years.
  • The new Fiat 500 subcompact has one-half million combinations to choose from.

  • The percentages of households in the US that are married couple households: 1950 - 79%; 1960 - 74%; 1970 - 70%; 1980 - 61%; 1990 - 56%; 2000 - 52%; 2010 - 50%
  • CERN, the new particle accelerator on the border of France and Switzerland, is the largest information generator in history, generating one billion particle interactions/sec and creating one trillion bytes/sec of information. This must be algorithmed down in 3 microseconds by a series of computers to a few hundred bytes which are saved for future examination. All other bytes must be immediately jettisoned forever, to make room for the next second's worth of data.
  • Economist Mary Meeker, a securities analyst and venture capitalist with Merrill Lynch, Salomon, and Morgan Stanley, and "One of the ten smartest in tech" according to Fortune 2010: "I took a deep dive into these questions a little more than a year ago, and I'm finally up for air....By our rough estimate, USA Inc. has a net worth of negative $44 trillion. That comes to $143,000 per capita. Negative." (Business Week, Feb 2011)
  • USA Today, 6-7-11: "The government added $5.3 trillion in new financial obligations in 2010, largely for programs such as Medicare and Social Security, to bring the total of unpaid financial promises to a record $61.6 trillion."
Healthcare Math dysfunction
  • Healthcare costs are now $2.6 trillion/yr. In 1970, when I began medical school, this was $74 billion/yr.
  • Healthcare as a percentage of GDP: 1960 - 5.2%; 1970 - 7.2%; 1980 - 9.1%; 1990 - 12.3%; 2000 - 13.8%; 2011 - 17.6%
  • Doctors graduating from medical school owe an average of $155,000, while a quarter of new med school grads owe over $200,000. It's not uncommon to hear of med student debt over $400,000.
  • Medicare expenditures last year reached $523 billion but with income of only $486 billion--a gap of $37 billion in one year.
  • 10,000 baby-boomers will become eligible for Medicare every day for the next 19 years, causing the Medicare fiscal discrepancy to widen rapidly and unsustainably.
  • The PDR (Physician Desk Reference) has 3,300 pages; when first created in 1948, it had 300 pages.
  • If I read two healthcare related articles every day for a year, next year at this time I would be 1,000 years behind in my reading.
  • The 1965 Medicare/Medicaid bill was 137 pages; Thirty years later, there were over 130,000 pages of rules to comply with.
  • The 1993 Clinton Healthcare Reform Act had 1,432 pages, called by one Democratic Senator "overwhelmingly complex, almost frighteningly complex."
  • The current healthcare reform act (Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act) is twice as large, at 2,800 pages, and will be the most complex and expensive issue in U.S. history--and, if the multiplier holds, will result in millions of pages of regulations.
We should be both alarmed and assured.
Alarmed, because there's no way we can handle numbers like these--particularly when they'll only continue to increase vertically. In the past, the math was mild, manageable, and comprehensible. Now, none of these descriptors apply. The math has gotten away from us, the numbers have gone rogue. Dysfunction? You want to see dysfunction? Stay tuned.
Assured, because God is particularly good at math. Oxford's mathematical physicist, Roger Penrose, has calculated that the precision of the created universe is on the order of 10 to the 10th to the 123rd. "This is an extraordinary figure," he writes. "One could not possibly even write the number down in full...Even if we were to write a zero on each separate proton and on each separate neutron in the entire universe, we should fall far short of writing down the figure needed."
"The Great Architect of the Universe now begins to appear as a pure mathematician," said Sir James Jeans, a contemporary of Einstein. "The universe can be best pictured, though still very imperfectly and inadequately, as consisting of pure thought, the thought of what we must describe as a mathematical thinker."
"Such as say that things infinite are past God's knowledge," wrote Augustine, "may just as well leap headlong into this pit of impiety, and say that God knows not all numbers...What madman would say so?...What are we mean wretches that dare presume to limit His knowledge?"
As for me and my house, we'll stick with the One who knows all numbers.

  • That the number of electrons that pass through a filament of a light bulb in a minute equals the number of drops of water that flow over Niagara Falls in a century?

Disconnected - Andrew Leigh (An Excerpt)


Organisational membership is down. We are less likely to attend church. Political parties and unions are bleeding members. Sporting participation and cultural attendance are down.
Volunteering is likely below its post-war peak, though it did record a rise in the late 1990s.
We have fewer friends and are less connected with our neighbours than in the mid-80s. Other measures have flatlined, but few have risen.
So what explains the trends in social capital? First, let’s exonerate one defendant. The character variously known as “economic reform”, “economic liberalism” or “economic rationalism” frequently has been blamed for eroding social capital.
For example, Australian sociologist Eva Cox takes the view that free markets undermine trust and reciprocity. She writes that “the idea of the social is losing ground to the concepts of competition, and the money markets are replacing governments. The social aspects of humanity have somehow disappeared and we are left with a more atomised image of individuals competing in an endless process of distrust.”

Cox argues that means-tested social welfare, privatisation of banks and airlines, user pays and private health insurance have contributed to a decline in social capital in Australia.
From a similar perspective, another sociologist, Michael Pusey, contends that the “aggressive re-engineering of our institutions [has] brought a decline in trust . . . There’s a tendency for people to view others as competitors rather than friendly strangers.”
What both these critiques miss is that when two people repeatedly interact with one another in a market, they are likelier to behave well towards one another.
A plumber who turns up on time and charges the quoted price is a guy you’ll hire again. A boss who encourages workers to knock off early on quiet days is likelier to find employees willing to stay a little longer when times are busy.
In my view, there are seven plausible explanations for the drop in some social capital measures in Australia: long working hours, the feminisation of the workplace, car commuting, television, diversity, impersonal technologies and tipping points.
* Working hours: When I ask friends why they think social capital may be declining, the most common answer is “everyone is working longer hours”. But the truth is a little more complicated.
Despite the oft-heard rhetoric about how average working hours are rising, the bare facts show average hours of work have actually declined since the late 1970s.
On average, employed men work about three fewer hours a week than they did in the late 70s, while employed women work about two fewer hours a week.
However, just looking at averages masks the major changes that have taken place in Australian work patterns in the past generation. While the average working week has shortened modestly, there has been a growth in both short-hour and long-hour jobs. There is an increasing proportion of workers in jobs that require fewer than 35 hours a week, and a higher proportion in jobs that take more than 45 hours a week.
The “regular job” isn’t so regular any more.
* Feminisation: In the 50s, if a classroom of children were asked what their mothers did, most would have answered that their mother was a homemaker; it would have been an unusual child who stated their mother worked.
By the 80s, the proportions with working and non-working mothers would probably have been about equal.
And today the children with homemaker mothers would be in the minority.
From 1978 to 2009, the share of women who were employed rose from 40% to 55%. The largest increase was in part-time work, which nearly doubled from 14% in the late 70s to 25% in 2009.
Not surprisingly, this increased participation in the paid workforce has led to women spending less time doing housework.
Acknowledging that rising female labour force participation may have reduced social capital outside the home is not to suggest Australia is worse off as a result. The increasing feminisation of Australia’s companies is the best hope for workplace social capital.
* Car commuting: Solo car commuting is the least social way of getting to and from work. Part of the reason for this is it takes a considerable amount of time out of the day. Over a given distance, a car will generally get you there quicker than public transport. As a consequence, a rise in car commuting has allowed people to choose houses even farther from their workplace.
* Television: Over time, some of us seem to have replaced friends with Friends, and neighbours with Neighbours. There is no shortage of programs about people doing active things, from sports to cooking to dancing. But the irony is these programs have become popular precisely when Australians are participating in fewer social activities.
* Diversity: A spate of studies suggests continued high levels of immigration will bring a raft of economic and social benefits to Australia. But we should not gild the lily. Most likely, higher diversity will lead to lower levels of interpersonal trust.
It will also create an opening for opportunistic political entrepreneurs. The challenge for policy-makers is how to maintain the present levels of immigration while mitigating the impact on our social and political fabric. When it comes to interpersonal trust, one useful strategy would be to focus more attention on the problem itself: building local trust in immigrant communities. It may also be that, through time, race and ethnicity become less salient divisions in Australia.
Harvard University professor Robert Putnam argues that diversityreduces trust since people “act like turtles”, hunkering down to avoid those who are somehow different. Yet he also sees hope in the declining importance of the Catholic-Protestant divide in the US over the past half-century.
* Impersonal technologies: In sentencing actor Charlie Sheen for using prostitutes, the judge reportedly asked why a famous man like him would have to pay for sex. Sheen’s answer: “I don’t pay them for sex. I pay them to leave.” Revolting as Sheen’s sentiments may sound, they reflect one way technology has changed our interactions with one another.
As Yale economist Ian Ayres has pointed out, many people may be willing to pay a premium to avoid human interactions. If you don’t like to chat with the person staffing the cash register, many large stores will let you scan your own groceries. If you prefer not to speak with the person at the service station, pay at the pump. If you don’t like dealing with lecturers and classmates in person, sign up for distance education.
In some cases, technologies have crowded out human interaction because the new machines are better. Who bothers popping to a bookstore when they can get the book on their Kindle in less than a minute? In other cases, companies offer discounts for customers who interact only online. Most banks levy a surcharge on over-the-counter withdrawals (essentially asking customers to pay for a face-to-face conversation).
Like physical fitness, our skill in chatting with others is a learned habit. Pay a visit to Manhattan, and you’ll be struck by how comfortably and readily most New Yorkers can chat with someone they have never met before. A Reader’s Digest survey of 35 cities ranked New York No. 1 for civility. It’s not because Manhattan residents have the gene for sociability but because when you share a small island with 1.6 million other people, helping one another and making conversation is what you have to do to get by each day.
The difficulty with these explanations is we can say good things about most of them. Australia is clearly better off for being a more ethnically diverse nation, in which more women participate in the paid workforce than in the past.
Long working hours mostly reflect the preferences of workers, not bosses. Few of us would voluntarily relinquish cars, televisions or ATMs. What this means is any attempt to increase social capital in Australia will not involve a backlash against the causes, but innovative strategies to make us more socially connected. We need to shape a better future, not simply try to revive the past.

PASSION: Ungapping Performance and Potential -A Contemplation

Hari Minggu pagi, bagi sebagian dari kita, saat dimana kita pergi ke Gereja. Minggu ini ada suatu hal yang saya dapatkan. PASSION! Sewaktu kam sekeluarga berjalan menuju pelataran parkir sehabis ibadah, saya melihat sepasang muda-mudi dengan kisaran umur 18-20 tahun berjalan kaki dengan penuh semangat menuju tempat ibadah, entah kenapa saat melihat hal tersebut ada sesuatu yang menggelitik saya...Kemudian sesaat setelah sampai dikediaman kami, saya kembali tergelitik dengan apa yang saya lihat tadi dan saya teringat saat-saat pertama kali saya mulai pergi ke tempat ibadah kurang lebih 15 tahun lalu, di waktu-waktu itu saya mengalami apa yang diistilahkan oleh sepasang muda-mudi adalah cinta pertama untuk pergi ke tempat ibadah, saat itu hujan sederas apa pun, saat itu tubuh secapai apa pun, singkatnya dalam keadaan apa pun saya sangat menanti-nantikan untuk pergi ke tempat ibdadah tersebut untuk melakukan ibadah bersama yang lainnya dan setiap kali pula saat ibadah saya mendapatkan sesuatu yang baru dan luar biasa. Saya teringat bagaimana dalam keadaan kuyup sekali pun atau tanpa kursi sekali pun sepanjang ibadah, saya tetap bisa sangat menikmati waktu-waktu itu. Saat mengenang masa-masa itu muncullah satu kata dalam benak saya, yaitu PASSION

PASSION secara literal bisa diartikan adalah gairah, berapi-api, namun seringkali istilah tersebut berkesan ke arah yang lain, maka saya memilih analogi lain yang menurut Ekuslie Goestandi di mingguan KONTAN (25 September 2006) sebutkan adalah PENGALAMAN DI SAAT-SAAT CINTA PERTAMA MULAI BERSEMI....
Tentu kita semua pernah atau minimal tahu apa itu cinta pertama...entah cinta itu adalah dalam arti EROS, PHILEO, atau pun AGAPE....pastilah kita semua tahu saat hal terebut muncul hati dan pikiran kita senantiasa dipenuhi oleh cinta tersebut. Kita pasti tahu bagaimana pengalaman cinta pertama kita kepada kekasih kita, apa pun kita lakukan yang terbaik buat si dia, bukan? Selalu berusaha memberi lebih dari pada yang diharapkan oleh pasangan kita. Semuanya itu dilakukan dengan sukarela, sukacita, tulus dan tanpa mengharapkan balasan apa pun, yang penting si dia senang. Mulai dari anter bolak-balik kampus, menunggu dia keluar kuliah walaupun kita terguyur hujan sekali pun atau traktir si dia sekalipun bikin dompet langsung tandas, apa lagi jika si dia sedih pasti lah kita langsung kelabakan dan berusaha sekuat mungkin untuk menghilangkan kesedihannya.Kita lakukan semua itu tanpa mengharapkan imbalan dalam segala bentuknya seperti kompensasi, balas jasa ataupun bayaran, bukan?
Nah, sepenggal analogi di atas menggambarkan apa yang diistilahkan adanya PASSION di hati kita. Singkatnya ada GIVING MY BEST SPIRIT di hati kita. Inilah yang saya pikir dapat membuat hidup kita untukNYa, untuk pasangan kita, untuk keluarga kita, untuk pekerjaan kita dan untuk dunia tempat dimana kita hidup bisa membawa dampak yang sangat positif dan menyenangkan. Dalam konteks kehidupan ibadah dan berkeluarga saya kira PASSION bukanlah hal yang asing lagi, namun bagaimana dalam konteks dunia kerja?
PASSION di dunia kerja??? Bagaimana mungkin? bukankah jika kita melakukan hal itu bisa-bisa kita dimanfaatkan yang lain???
Saya termenung cukup lama ketika hal ini muncul. Lalu saya teringat dengan satu slogan yang sdh menjadi sangat biasa, yaitu bekerja itu ibadah, jujur saya diingatkan slogan ini oleh salah satu rekan kerja saya secara tidak sengaja. Ya, betul bekerja dengan sebaik mungkin juga adalah PASSION dari ibadah kita padaNya dan juga bekerja juga adalah bagian dari PASSION kita untuk pasangan kita dan keluarga kita. Siapa sih yang nnga senang kalau kita bekerja dengan sepenuh hati, bukan?
Nah bagi perusahaan di tempat kita bekerja, PASSION ini juga diperlukan dan bisa berdampak luar biasa. Perusahaan atau unit kerja kita jika berhasil menciptakan unsur PASSION sebagai bagian dari lingkungan kerjanya dapat membantu untuk mendongkrak PERSONAL PERFORMANCE setiap SDM mencapai OPTIMAL POTENTIAL ABILITY nya.
Menurut Brian Tracy terkait potensi setiap manusia adalah :3
“The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channeled toward some great good.”
Seperti kita ketahui secara umum pastilah sering dirasakan adanya Gap antara PERFORMANCE dan POTENTIAL. Nah, salah satu yang bisa mengexplore potensi di samudera yang belum terarungi ini dan merekatkan antara PERFORMANCE dan POTENTIAL adalah PASSION.
